Trails Collective Weekly Rundown

February 5, 2021

This week we’ll take you through what’s shaking in the Northeast Trail Running world. We bring you voices from the weekend’s races including CJ’s and Naked Nick. A mention of media including our gear review of the week, CULTRA, and the Pain Cave. A shout out to our TC Live interview this week with Nicole Yokum. Cue you into event registrations close to capping out. And breakdown the FKT’s of the week. Let’s dig in.

YouTube Version of the Trails Collective Weekly Rundown

Wednesday I released a review of The North Face Flight VECTIV, the flagship model in the series. Like the VECTIV Infinite, it was a fun shoe to test. Is the North Face is finally toeing the line with a trail runner worthy of their standing in the outdoor space? Dig in with me.

TC Live Interview Series

This Thursday, February 4th Ian will be connecting with Nicole Yokum. We’ll dig into the important topics in life including:

  • Seeing what she was doing arriving to the first climb at Frozen Snot ahead of him
  • Asking why pursuing just one PhD at a time was too easy for her
  • A vote for whether Vermont or Pennsylvania is the better State for trail running

In other Media

  • CULTRA released Episode 113 last Friday, connecting with all around good guy and man-of-the-month, NJ’s Cole Crosby. I’ve not had a chance to listen yet, but it sounds like the crew had a great time.
  • The Gunks Runner’s Pain Cave released Episode 78 Tuesday, Twenty Questions with Kaytlyn Gerbin, Transgrancanaria champ and new FKT holder on the Wonderland Trail.

Results

CJ’s Resolution Run

CJ’s Resolution Run ran this past Saturday in Mifflingburg, PA. A mission of the event is to “resolve to overcoming the challenges of Autism”. This wasn’t one my radar, but saw a friend post, and checked in with his family. Becky Kosek and girls provide a window into the runs and weekend in the video episode this week.

Naked Nick

UberEndurance Sport’s Naked Nick pushback went down in Leesport, PA. James Smith and Tiffany England walked away with the 25k wins over a 240 entrant field. For the 50k, Justin Scheid and Justyna Wilson took the wins over the 105 finisher field. I was able to check in with Tiffany England, as well as Stephen, who finished 9th in the 50k on the event. Tiffany and Stephen give us the event’s rundown in the video episode.

Upcoming Events

Saturday, February 6th

  • Sassquad Trail Running’s Squatchy Onesie Fest 5k-Marathon, slated for this Saturday, February 6th, modifying to a wave start format to keep it under the 25 person NJ mitigation requirement. “You guys should put on an event where everyone has to wear a onesie.” “That sounds like an AMAZING idea.” “It should be in the dead of winter.” “Done.”

The UltraSignUp Hot List

FKT’s

NH:

  • Ben Thompson, notching in impressive 1h 29m for the 12.6 km Franconia Ridge Loop, a beautiful loop in the White’s over Mt Lafayette, Mt Lincoln, and Little Haystack on the Franconia Ridge. This route’s had some fast times and a competitive history. Ben’s time shaves just under 3 minutes off Steven Lange’s mark from July.

NJ:

  • Aaron Carlisle, 2h 25m for the 13.5 mile Waywayanda State Park Loop, shaving 15 minutes from the men’s Unsupported mark.

NY:

  • David Kilgore answering back in reclaiming a 50 km Manhattan Loop, this time lowering the men’s unsupported mark by just under 20 minutes to 3h 22m. For those keeping track, even if paved and pretty flat, that’s not a slow 50k.
